Wide receiver Julio Jones practiced for the second time this week, and cornerback Asante Samuel and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon participated for the first time on Friday; albeit all on a limited basis.  The trio are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game in Tampa against the Buccaneers.

Jones re-aggravated his ankle in last week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, a game where the Falcons passing game never completely got off the ground. His injury was not only felt, it was obvious. Matt Ryan was out of sync and was unable to connect down the field for the big play.

Jones not only has outstanding speed, but he takes the double team away from either Roddy White or tight end Tony Gonzalez when he is completely healthy. When he is limited, it completely changes Atlanta’s game plan. Expect Jones to be active again this week as long as the pain isn’t too much when he tests his ankle Sunday morning.

Samuel has been hindered by a shoulder injury that kept him off the practice field every day except Friday.  He will be a game time decision. If he is unable to go, the Falcons secondary will be about as thin as a super model the day of her shoot. Robert McClain would slide in for Samuel and Christopher Owens would likely play the nickel.

Weatherspoon has missed the past three weeks with a ankle injury, and was sideswiped by an illness this week as well. Aside from that, he appears to be healthy enough to be back on the field come Sunday. At least that’s what he proclaimed Wednesday.

His presence is more than needed, as the Falcons are near the bottom of the league in rush defense, giving up just over five yards per carry. Assuming his illness passes in the next 24-36 hours, expect him to be active and itching to get back on the field on Sunday.
