The news broke at practice Monday afternoon that offensive tackle Will Svitek will miss the entire 2012 season with an upper arm injury. Details surrounding the situation have not been released yet.
This is a huge blow for the Falcons, as they will be forced to rely on Sam Baker and Lamar Holmes going forward. Head coach Mike Smith talked about Holmes playing this week, saying, “We were very careful the first couple of weeks with Lamar, and he’ll get some significant playing time in the game this week.”
Baker has not been impressive in two preseason games so far in 2012. He is listed as the No. 1 left tackle on the depth chart, but that could easily change if Holmes is able to put in a strong showing.
Atlanta will also cross-train some of the other linemen in the hope that they may be able to help out the left side. The Falcons have not discussed bringing in any more help, but that decision could be on the horizon with Svitek out for the year.
